Donald A Wollheim was member of the Futurians fan group in the 1930s.  He began writing professionally under his own name and pseudonyms like David Grinnell.  He and his wife, Elsie Balter Wollheim, founded DAW Books which derived its name from his initials.  DAW was the first mass market publisher specifically for science fiction and fantasy fiction novels.
