   Ayatollah Khomeini Declares Fatwa on Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie published The Satanic Verses which contained references to the Prophet Muhammad and other aspects of Islam that were not acceptable to Muslims.  On February 14, 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini called on Muslims to kill Rushdie and his publishers.

   US Invades Panama
The United States invaded Panama in order to overthrow Manuel Noriega.  He had been indicted in the United States on drug trafficking charges.  He was also accused of suppressing democracy in Panama and endangering US citizens.
